  The Surgery Room
The Surgery Room delves into the intricate, ever-
evolving and ambiguous relationship between bodies and
technology, emphasizing how technological advancements
often promise liberation and progress but can result
in manipulation and control, imposing new forms
of surveillance. By examining the body not merely
as an organic entity but as an apparatus deeply infused with technological elements, the work highlights the social implications of this fusion, reflecting issues of identity, privacy, emotional manipulation and the digital traces we leave behind.
Inspired by the concept of the anatomical theater,
the project adopts dissection as a metaphor and through
an interplay of performance, data visualization and
storytelling emphasizes the profound impact technology
has on human experience and the ways in which it can
both connect and alienate us.

	ACT I:&#38;nbsp;Identity Affirmation&#38;nbsp;and Mass Surveillance

In this opening act, the project focuses on how image recognition and machine learning systems shape identity in the digital era. Here bodies become objects of data collection: scanned, classified and monitored. This process reveals both the potential and the pitfalls of modern surveillance: while such systems promise efficiency and personalization they also embed biases that can mislabel or stereotype individuals based on incomplete or prejudiced training data.

A “hacked” machine learning model humorously assigns labels such as never disappointing, desirable, vulnerable and paranoid. These categories are intentionally grounded in existing stereotypes, highlighting how easily systems can be manipulated or biased, emphasizing that algorithmic decision-making is never neutral but carries cultural, social and personal assumptions.

	ACT II:&#38;nbsp;Emotional Transparency&#38;nbsp;and Privacy Invasion

This act examines how data-driven tools extend beyond the identification of physical attributes to probe into emotional and neural realms. By measuring heart rate and brain waves, these technologies break down the barriers between internal experiences and external expression, making visible what traditionally remains hidden. In this environment, individuals become both transparent and manipulable where emotions are fully calculated.

The performance highlights the risks of biometric surveillance: access to brainwave data poses significant threats to personal privacy, as external stimuli have the potential to control or alter mental states without consent. By interweaving pulsating music, strobe lighting and real-time biometric feedback, the act underscores the delicate balance between fostering deeper self-awareness and exposing individuals to invasive technological scrutiny.

ACT III: Behavioral Monitoring and Freedom of Expression

In the final act, the performance explores how human actions and desires are increasingly dictated by external digital stimuli—such as notifications, alerts and algorithmic suggestions that structure daily behaviors. The dancers begin in a state of atrophy and stillness, symbolizing bodies paralyzed by overexposure to technological commands. This initial immobility reflects how constant digital input can suppress autonomy, shaping not only what people do but also what they want. As the performance unfolds, sound cues resembling notification alerts act as electrical impulses, gradually reactivating the dancers’ bodies.

Yet, as the rhythm intensifies, the dancers begin to move in unison, shifting from controlled responses to self-directed motion. This collective choreography becomes a form of resistance, a reclaiming of agency and expression through rupture beyond the constraints imposed by digital systems.

Act III reflects on the tension between technological control and the human need for autonomy, suggesting that even within systems of constant monitoring and manipulation, bodies can find ways to reconnect, move and resist.

AV Installation

The three acts that compose The Surgery Room take shape within a video installation designed to reflect the metaphor of fragmentation as a form of dissection. This spatial configuration becomes an active extension of the conceptual framework of the work, embodying the idea of the body as a techno-organic system broken into parts for analysis and reinterpretation.

The audio system is built on a quadraphonic setup, composed of four speakers positioned to define the perimeter of the space, combined with a subwoofer. This configuration allows for a three-dimensional soundscape, where audio elements can move across the room, reinforcing the bodily dimension of the experience.
Each act of the installation is accompanied by a specific sound architecture, designed to reflect the conceptual and emotional character of the narrative. The distribution of sound in space is used to create dynamic effects: voices, sounds, and musical elements are spatialized to travel between the speakers, immersing the audience and modifying their perception of proximity and direction.

The space is equipped with three projectors and one camera, positioned to serve different narrative and interactive functions. Upon entering the space, a first projector (P1) is connected to a tracking camera (S1) and projects content onto the back side of the main wall, creating an interactive station where visitors are scanned and introduced to the core themes of the work.
Inside the main space, two projectors (P2 and P3) are dedicated to mapping the video content across the large central panel and its fragmented extensions.

		<description> Origin
Discogs was founded 25 years ago by Kevin Lewandowski who created the platform to upload his electronic music records. From there, it evolved into an open community, an open-source database where everything can be updated and modified, with all users contributing their input.Origin is an installation that celebrates the birth of the platform and the genre it emerged from, evoking the imagery of that era and all the actions that have created and continue to build the Discogs archive and community.Music is not just made of notes but of scenarios, stories, and places. Origin aims to celebrate music as a collection of sensations it generates, connecting different worlds, eras, and people. The idea behind this experience is to transform the auditory and visual analyses conducted on Discogs albums and the electronic genre into a tangible experience. Users actively participate in creating new covers, which will become part of a new generative archive, a strong testament to the continuous evolution of music and the Discogs community.

The experience begins from the outside, where users' attention is drawn through sound coming from the internal environment and informational and representative spots. Inside the experience, there are three screens and a MIDI keyboard placed in the center of the room. The first side screen displays a sample of 300 covers, divided into three libraries, each corresponding to a different world and style. The album covers, taken from Discogs, were categorized and analyzed in a previous data visualization intervention.&#38;nbsp;These libraries were developed in p5.js, and using the keyboard knob it’s possible to view them individually. Additionally, they control the dominant color of each visual on the second screen, thanks to a specific CSV extracted in Python and subsequently inserted into TouchDesigner. On the second screen, we find generative visuals belonging to the previously mentioned worlds. The visuals are an aesthetic summary of the analyses conducted on the covers of the first screen, allowing for the generation of additional covers. Each world retains a different sound and harmony based on the selected visual and style. All the previously generated visuals will compose the third screen, which will update as changes are made on the second, allowing the user to contribute to creating a new generative archive. All the keyboard keys have been parameterized and associated with a sound and various parts of the visual through TouchDesigner, Ableton and p5.js.

		<description> Requiem

The project
tells a facet of the territory of Pesaro, the Italian Capital of Culture 2024.
Requiem is a space that delves into the emotions of a painting: The Embalming of Christ by Giovanni Bellini. The painting served as the pinnacle of the famous altarpiece that Bellini painted in Pesaro for the main altar of the Church of San Francesco between 1473 and 1476. The painting is now housed in the Vatican Museums. Its absence became the key to an abstract narrative, using sounds and architectural light to explore the dichotomy of love and death.
Through an interactive experience, visitors have the opportunity to become part of the depicted scene, exploring it through the emotions it evokes.

The project was exhibited at the Storie e geografie (Stories and Geographies) exhibition, which features seven projects for Pesaro, the Italian Capital of Culture 2024, as a cartographic reflection on the territory.

		<description> Syne
Syne is an installation that showcases a meeting point between humans and technology, highlighting the interaction between the two.
It’s based on an interactive system, where a surface made up of a point cloud is activated by an external energy, the user's hand moving over the sensor. This action generates a magnetic field that attracts a thin veil, causing an electronic sound that is the direct result of the interference.

The project was developed during a workshop with Laura Arcangeli from Studio Ultraviolet.to&#38;nbsp; in February 2024.

		<description> Variations
Variations explores the evolving visual and auditory landscape of ambient electronic music album covers from 1966 to today, focusing on a sample of approximately 8.500 covers from the Discogs database. It unfolds in three phases that offer a multi-sensory interpretation of how album art connects to its musical genre.

EXPLORATIONThe first part of the project consists of an interactive system that through
input allows the exploration of covers of the genre of experimental ambient electronic music.
On one axis is the timeline, from 1966 to the present, on the other is the popularity of the album. The scale of the images shows how sought after that cover is, meaning how many people have added it to their wishlist.

COLOR ANALYSIS AND SONIFICATIONThe second part of the project analyzes the saturation of album covers over time, from 1966 to the present. This analysis is applied both visually and through sound. The scatter plot was generated using ImageJ, while the soundtrack was created using Sonify, then imported into Ableton, and converted into a MIDI track to create
a multi-layered piece using instruments relevant to the chosen music genre.

ATMOSPHERES AND PLAYLISTSThe third part showcases the different facets of the genre through audio-visual playlists. The initial database was manually divided into categories, thus creating clusters of images that are similar to each other. The predominant resulting categories show a propensity for natural images and textures, distorted faces,
and abstract images reminiscent of space. The images from each category were then arranged by similarity using PicArrange, processed, and edited
to be audio-reactive.

Martial is a visual project where I experiment with the use of tracking methods on a moving body. The video shows the martial arts master Xu Guan Guan as she performs a Taiji form in the Chen style. After recording the video, I manipulated it using TouchDesigner, where I utilized the blob-track TOP to derive data that were then used to instance geometries. Then I added an audio track and made the video responsive to kicks to make it slide to different points of the footage.

		<description> Chasing Orlando
Chasing Orlando is a theatrical comedy based on Ludovico Ariosto's Orlando Furioso, presented in June 2024 at the theater La Fenice in Senigallia. The project focused on the creation of digital scenography, live interactive 3D digital backgrounds in the browser for theatre performance. It’s part of the digital project for the performing arts course.

The Digital Experience Lab, directed by Daniele Tabellini, conceived, designed, and developed software for the creation of live visuals to accompany the text and acting. Divided into groups, each team worked independently but complementarily, using approaches and techniques for concept design, expressive programming, and creative coding. The group I worked with focused on the scenography of three scenes for which we created a cloth that takes on different shapes and meanings throughout the show, using three.js and cannon.js (︎ more info).
The software, controlled by students during the performance, was released under an open license on GitHub, allowing for both reuse and further research.

		<description>A-tempo

A-tempo is a project born for the Garden of Forgotten Fruits in Pennabilli, the botanical garden envisioned by Tonino Guerra. It represents a threshold, marking the transition from everyday reality to the poetic dimension, ultimately leading to an understanding of Tonino Guerra's art. His delicate and enchanted way of seeing the world served as the guiding thread that led to the final concept, a project that reflects on themes related to rural civilization, the keeper of past values, reminding us of who we are and where we come from.

A-tempo was exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 2023 in the San Marino Pavilion. This Pavilion, titled Hosting Host, explores concepts ranging from the immaterial to the material and from the human to the more than human aspects of hospitality.

The project unfolds in two stages that take the visitor from the concreteness of the fruits to their intrinsic meaning, immersing them in a dimension where time is a subjective entity that marks moments of life. These two steps actually represent both a physical and mental threshold, as they stand between the entrance and the garden, putting the visitor in the psychophysical condition to fully enjoy and appreciate the visit.
